Pros & Cons: Organic Growing vs. Chemical Farming

Pros & Cons: Organic Growing vs. Chemical Farming
by Colle and Phyllis Davis

For the last forty years, the debate has been raging over the advantages and disadvantage of organic growing verses chemical farming. Early on, there was some really good evidence that organic was not quite up to the task and was not able to compete with ‘conventional/chemicals’ farming. Now, after years of rigorous testing the real truth has finally emerged; this time chemical farming loses, big time.

“The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value.” — Theodore Roosevelt, 26th US President

Organic methods of farming are superior in nearly every measurable category. The back or side story is that the cost of chemical farming is so high that governments have to subsidize it to keep people in farming. Over one half of farm income is now from subsidies paid by the US Government to farmers. [Most governments around the world subsidize food or food production to stay in power.

When farm land was originally switched from conventional farming to organic methods, the yields (output) dropped for several years. Then a very interesting trend developed: By using standard seeds, (not genetically modified – GM – seeds) the organic plots began to climb back up and in nearly all cases exceeded or at least matched the yield of the conventionally farm plots.

But the big difference was in the energy usage input to usable caloric output ratio. It takes six calories of input energy to yield one calorie of output energy using conventional methods. Organic methods require almost 50% less energy to achieve the same yields. And because there are no pesticides of any kind used in the organic methods, it further reduces the fossil fuel requirements (example, less spraying) and makes the entire farming process much safer for those directly involved, and their customers as well.

Portable Farms LTD has never had a request to set up anything except an organic system. Not once in all of the thousands of tours, tens of thousands of email inquiries and personal phone calls has anyone ever asked us about NON organic methods of raising food in a Portable Farms Aquaponics Systems. Organic methods are what food production will have to be for the majority of the world if we are to continue to have a healthy gene pool for humans.

With the current level of sophistication in the world, because of the Internet, nearly total media coverage and with millions of concerned people demanding transparency and the best food they can buy for themselves and their families, the pressure is building. Addressing a starving population with emergency supplies is one niche, but the real power comes in the demands of the growing and increasingly prosperous middle class around the world because this market is THE market and they will be for the next century, at least. These people have the money to buy organic and they will invest money to buy healthy food for themselves and their families. The market is shifting so quickly that most supermarkets now carry whole sections of organic produce and products to cater to this increasingly demanding market segment.

Here is where the real shift in the market place will take place: When the conventional/chemical products will be required to be labeled as dangerous and carry notices that state:

This product contains chemicals known to produce illnesses which include diseases, weakened immune systems, cancer, heart failure, seizures, dizziness, nausea, uncontrolled bleeding and a wide variety of other health problems. Consume at your own risk.

The scary part is that it warning is true even today and yet the labels are not there to warn unwary consumers. Would you buy products labeled with such a warning, similar to what is on cigarettes? No? Then join the growing organic movement and insist on healthy food for you and your family.

You can go ones step further and begin to grow your own food. A backyard garden or a Portable Farms Aquaponics Systems will insure you know where the food came from and that it is safe, nutritious and good for the earth.
